On Monday, the police announced the suspension of an initiative to reduce traffic fines in Dubai as the driver of the car can get up to 100 per cent in penalties.
The second version of the initiative started in February of this year, once the first version ended.
Colonel Jumah Salem bin Suwaidan, Director General of the Traffic Department of Dubai Police, confirmed that the discounts will not be granted anymore, however, drivers who have already obtained them will be able to keep the discounts.
Discounted fines will not be returned to the original amount.
The first initiative of its kind was launched in February of last year, and allowed drivers to take a 25 percent discount on fines if they could score zero violations for a period of three months.
There are no fines for six months that give them a 50 percent discount, and those who've been driving well for nine months get a 75 percent discount.
A 100% discount was offered to those who were able to drive safely and without fault for an entire year.
During its first year, up to 557,430 motorists took advantage of this initiative, saving a total of 546,970,930 dirhams in fines.
