The Public Prosecution of the United Arab Emirates clarified, in its recent awareness-raising messages on Twitter, that anyone who insults the UAE flag publicly or in any public place or site open to the public will be subject to sanctions.
Article (3) of Federal Law No. 2 of 1971 regarding the federation flag and its amendments stipulates that any person who drops the federation flag, destroys it or insults it in any way, will face imprisonment for a period of not less than 10 years and not more than 25 years.
The law also stipulates that in addition to the prison sentence, a person convicted of insulting the state flag will be charged a fine of at least 500,000 dirhams.
According to public prosecutors, the same penalty will be imposed on anyone who insults the flag of any member state of the Union, the flag of any country of the Gulf Cooperation Council, or the flag of any other country.
