Authorities at Thiruvananthapuram Airport earlier foiled an attempt to smuggle 30 kg of gold in a diplomatic package intended for the consulate.

A former employee of the UAE consulate in Kerala, southern India, was arrested in connection with a case of gold smuggling and the suspect was working as a professional at the consulate.

The authorities also launched a hunt campaign to arrest another former consular officer identified as Swapna Suresh.

The mission said that this suspect was working as an executive secretary at the consulate, but was expelled earlier because of misconduct.

The UAE embassy in India denied any links after the authorities at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport foiled an attempt to smuggle 30 kilograms of gold in a diplomatic package intended for the consulate.

Investigations revealed that the duo had been the mastermind of smuggling offers in the past, and it is believed that Sarith accepted the parcels sent to the UAE consulate.

"The UAE embassy in India condemns the attempt to misuse diplomatic channels by an individual involved in smuggling activities.

The embassy strongly rejects these actions and emphatically affirms that the mission and its diplomatic staff had no role in this matter, "the UAE embassy said in a statement to Al Khaleej newspaper on Sunday.
