Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anas Al-Saleh stated that the number of women who obtained Kuwaiti citizenship, according to Article 8 of their marriage to Kuwaitis, reached 38,505 cases from 1993 to the beginning of 2020.
The figures mentioned in the minister’s response to a parliamentary question by MP Ahmad al-Fadl and deposited with the General Secretariat of the National Assembly showed that the cases of naturalization of Kuwaiti wives reached an annual rate of about 1426, equivalent to about 118 cases per month for approximately 27 years.
According to the figures, women who obtained Kuwaiti citizenship, according to the Declaration of Desire and Article Eight during the period from 1993 to 1999, reached 10403 cases, while the number of cases reached 16305 during the period from 2000 to 2010, and reached 11797 cases during the period from 2011 to the beginning of 2020 .
Commenting on what was stated in the response to his question, Representative Ahmed al-Fadl affirmed that “this number of naturalization cases is sufficient to solve the (Bidun) problem according to the numbers of the beneficiaries announced by the Bidun Central Agency.”
He continued: It was «previously submitted a proposal to grant the wives of Kuwaitis the (Blockard) similar to (Green Card) in the United States of America, to give them the rights to reside and work without the need for sponsorship, so as to avoid any suspicion of exploitation and benefit from their naturalization, as well as to amend the status of some cases (Bidun) who prevent their status from fulfilling the conditions for granting Kuwaiti citizenship at the present time and the lack of a solution for them, ”indicating that, according to his proposal, (the Blue Card) will be granted for specific years and then granting them citizenship when certain conditions are met.
